Some days ago, we received the promo of a new collaboration between Supergloss and Omon Breaker, which will be released on digital format on 15th May and on vinyl on 15th June. Supergloss is widely known for its dj sets where its appreciation for early trance music clearly emerges while, last year, Omon Breaker has released a vinyl with Phase Fatale’ label BITE Records.
In the four songs (plus one remix done by Schacke) included in their Visual Freak EP, these two young artists celebrate their music influences and find a good balance between techno punching lines and early trance sounds reminiscent of the origins of this music, expressing one of the directions our music is heading to. The release title and songs titles such as Not Your Type, Visual Freak and Cyber Skin, well express the zeitgeist. In a cyberpunk-like future where humanity will be hybridized with machines, gender types could become totally useless.
The message expressed on Visual Freak EP can partly be compared to that expressed by old trance music. This release focuses on gender topics, while trance music evoked a general feeling of freedom enjoyed by party people in large venues. Songs such as Not Your Type and Cyber Skin, with their effected vocals, also evoke that futuristic imaginary evoked by early trance music as well. Today, we can find a similar imaginary in EBM-infused techno and in some industrial techno music. The remix done by Schacke for Cyber Skin is a good example of this.
In our post-Information Age, characterized by contamination, any existing bound is supposed to fall sooner or later. As already demonstrated by Postmodernists, our age is the result of a mixture of recombined and recontextualized old styles and trends. In Visual Freak EP, Supergloss and Omon Breaker portray this phenomenon.
