Year Zero EP is the last vinyl-only EP by the mysterious techno industrial project Post Scriptum, discovered by Function and rumored but never confirmed to be Peter Sliwinski (Echoplex). We have already reviewed his dark and electro-industrial influenced EP Until You Drop published by Sonic Groove and now we are going to analyze this new effort composed of two original tracks and two remixes for a total of four tracks.
Here he inaugurates his own label PS, which promises to be a stronghold for industrial influenced techno with an edge. Four tracks showing his brand of “sci-fi techno”, now even harder than what shown in his self-named debut album published by Infrastructure New York in 2015.
The title track starts our journey with futuristic and grooving blips, surrounded by deep basses and industrial sounds. Distant, obsessive vocals and snarly effects give us a soundscape where classic techno elements and modern noisy developments are linked in a unique style. Nuestra planeta is an even darker and more rhythmic affair full of steady industrial beats and percussion-loops. Vocal samples and nocturne atmospheres complete the sweaty and nervous track in a frantic crescendo.
the second side of the vinyl presents two remixes of the two main tracks done by the mysterious 9t9t (no information about him, maybe just another alias for Post Scriptum himself), in which we find straight techno elements reminding us of Detroit sound. The title track becomes faster and more danceable, while Nuestra planeta is slowed down in a minimal rhythmic track.
Another interesting work from one of the greatest name in modern techno, Year Zero EP shows once again the fast evolution of this relatively newcomer who is conquering the scene without much difficulties. A deep understanding of both techno and industrial history, a taste for rhythmic obsession and an attention for details are his weapons of choice. Let’s amuse ourselves with this last effort while waiting for another full length from him.
